Make it Happen

Shorts? Joe Fresh (cut from pants) Shirt? Winners Cardi? Gap Bag? Winners Shoes? Thrifted

I cut a pair of cargo pants into shorts. And just like Gretchen and the word 'fetch', I really want to make this look happen. I realize I cut right through the cargo pockets and rendered them absolutely useless (as demonstrated below) but in the world of fashion we can just market that as whimsical or quirky.

If we hadn't been going out for a walk yesterday when I wore this, I would have put some fakester glasses, striped socks and python pumps on, instead of my beat up and beloved oxfords. And then I would have carefully taped an outfit picture of mine into the fall 2011 J. Crew catalogue. In 1997 I thought fashion trends started in a Sears catalogue; now, as a wise fashion blogger, I know that the only way to make a trend happen is to have it styled by J. Crew. And somebody please tell Gretchen that fetch is only going to happen if it's a hash tag. Right? My shorts are so #fetch!

Mean Girls is one of my favorite quotable movies. And no, fetch will never work but these shorts look totally cute either way! And yes, what in the world would we do without the amazingness that is Jenna Lyons?? I would have never paired a tutu skirt with a camo utility jacket. The things we learn...

That's why her hair's so big, it's full of secrets . . .

I love this casual look! The oxfords were indeed a great touch and I love the pop of orange.

Nice Gretchen Weiners reference Yen. Although, when I saw your title I thought you might be referring to my favorite Mariah Carey song. It's an oldie but a goodie.

I would love to have your oxford shoes and shirt as well!

Awesome colour combo!! And even better print mixing.
I certainly hope that you don't accidentally put something in your pockets, that could be bad :)

Those shorts are definitely quirky - just wait! Everyone is going to be doing it in a few months, and we'll all have you to thank for it! :)

While I would love to see this look with some hot heels, I do have a special place in my heart for oxfords, and these are awesome!

Ugh, that word fetch. What does it mean?!! Besides to fetch something. The outfit is adorable. I especially love those brown oxfords with the whole thing.

Stop trying to make "Fetch" happen! I LOVE that you quoted Mean Girls. Officially want to be your virtual BFF.

gah, Ive been searching for oxfords in thrift stores for MONTHS, of course you have them. Love the ironic cargo-pocketless shorts

Your shorts ARE #fetch! And the color combination is #MAH-JOR! If you get that one, we are soul mates ... :)

cargo pockets are just plain mean, they all bulk to a gals hips and really who wants that?! I say good for you for chopping them in half, take that fat adding pants. ( although you clearly could not appear bulky even if you tried).

Love that orange cardi. I spotted it on sale at the Gap and could not for the life of me figure out how to style it...now Im kicking myself! You look super cute even without the spotted socks!

Love the color combination with the tops, the blue, white and orange. And you could always just sew the pockets closed, thus rendering them useful again...

I love this whole look! And not in the Regina George secretly-think-it's-fugly sort of way. Oxfords are the best, especially when they're older and worn in!

Fun fact. I went to a private school that only allowed girls to wear shorts to their knees so we all started wearing men's cargo shorts. It was the hip style at my high school for a solid year or two. At one point I owned about 10 pairs of thrifted men's cargo shorts. Talk about a weird trend.

What ever happened to Lacey Chalbert? She was so #fetch.

Hehe, I recently cut up a T-shirt of mine in an attempt to make it into a tank top. I had so much fun with the scissors that I cut ALL the way through the would be strap. ha, rendering it nearly unwearble. In a flash of brilliance, however, I just knotted the one side so it became a sort of lopsided tank- FASHION! - WAAZAH! (:

Do you think maybe 'someone out there' is trying to tell you to stop wearing your shorts so short !!!!

Naaa...... right?

I love your shorts! I have a bunch of pants that I'd like to do this with - I think it would totally extend their life and look a little "fetch" too :)

When I was in high school (and for a little while afterwards" I used to cut out my pants pockets. I always felt they added too much bulk to my adolescent thighs. Sure I couldn't carry change anymore but I shaved off a couple of inches without...what's that word...exercise. Winner!

well you could always hang a hammer or some other tool through the top of the pocket, just in case you needed a hammer on an evening walk.
personally i think jenna lyons would die of joy over this look, it's incredible.

Yay my favourite shirt! It looks fantastic with the orange cardi. I've been cutting my sons' manky long cargo pants into shorts for years: yeah, gotta watch those pockets . . .
