Recently I went to lingerie shop and asked if they sold slips. The lady (who, to be honest, did not speak English very well), handed me a bustier top. I don't even know why I tried... The best place to get a slip, if you need one (and you probably do, right?) is the thrift store. You can probably find them at Walmart or Target too but why pay more when you can pay less? I pay maximum $3 for a slip, cut the lace off the bottom edge because that lace always seems to leave a lump, and go about my merry way.
I know going to the thrift store to buy slips in not the most exciting task but next time, you are there, pick up both a nude and a black slip for a few dollars*. One day, when you put on that cute new skirt from F21 and curse the beam of sunlight that renders that skirt a complete peepshow, you will thank your past self for buying those slips and saving the day.
You should be thrifting... some slips.

I once went to a wedding where the bridesmaids were all wearing pale yellow gowns and NO SLIPS! It was dreadful. Women need to be educated on the importance of proper foundation garments.
It's so true about thrift stores and slips. The vintage ones are also seem to be made of better fabrics too. I was fortunate enough to inherit several of my Nana's but I'm always looking for back-ups for when I wear them out.
Oh my gosh it really is a hidden gem. My favorite are the vintage slips that have really gorgeous lace detail. Their really easy to find too. I don't even want to talk about my slip collection and the fact that I'm a borderline hoarder.
I'm a huge vintage slip thrifter, too! I always look through the 'drawers' where they keep the lingerie. LOVE the pretty vintage ones you can find--great colors, too. I have a whole stockpile as well.
I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a 20 year old girl that has a lot of "grandma slips." And yes they were all thrifted.

You're right about the lace making lumps, but I never thought about cutting it off before. That's tonight's project, thanks! I'm usually all about thrifting (and I avoid Walmart and Target religiously) but as far as underwear goes, I splurge at Nordstrom (decent ethical standards). I got a short nude slip there a while ago and I'm sure I'm going to be able to use it the rest of my life!

Just so you know?? Target and WalMart don't always have slips, not in the right size/shape/whatever.
You may have just turned me into a thrifter, because I'm already turning into my grandmother and believe in lined skirts and a "proper" slip.
(But I did live through the day last month when I unknowingly wore a thinner than I thought dress from one of those cheap but fun stores...)
Totally unrelated to thrifting or see-through clothing (which I am all too familiar with... I realize that makes me sound like a stripper, but really I just suck at realizing things are see-through until much later when I'm wearing them) ANYWAYS. a) why make a skirt see-through? Who is this woman that wants all her business out on the street? Line those skirts people!
b) I use my mom's old slips, and I'm surprised how often I have to turn to them, especially in the summertime.

YES! Hurray for vintage slips! They are lovely, better fabric than modern (if you can even find them), and have gorgeous details.
I found a Christian Dior 1/2-slip from the 80s for $16; slate grey with pale grey lace. Just a beautiful thing.
Full slips and 1/2-slips are essential - and great for layering in the winter for warmth (I know, hard to think of it).

It is SO hard to find a good slip these days! All the "slips" sold in stores today are actually just shapewear -- and those ride up on me like there's no tomorrow!
I have an old grandma slip that I cut the lace off as well! So funny to hear that a lot of other ladies do this too! :)

I recently went looking for a slip for a see through dress (why do they even make them see through?) and not even Macys had any. The closest thing I could find was shape wear. So... I just wore the dress. Apparently it wasn't as see through as I thought (or so, my boyfriend says, which he might have been lying so I wear it again haha!).

I was joking about how skanky I felt in my knee-length dress today and was informed that since I am wearing a (10 cent! Silk!) slip under it that I'm probably not a hussy. I have a small and growing collection of proper slips and have given up looking at the Walmart/targets of the world because A) they often don't have any B) if they do, they suck C) they are like $15.
I am so glad that someone else under the age of 65 appreciates a good slip! (and sequins) :)

I'm not sure I could like this post more. Several reasons. I think slips are important, and so many women do not wear them when they are most needed. Also because it reminded me how excited I am to do a bit of thrifting tomorrow, and also gave me somewhere to start! And your wit is wonderful.

My twelve year old self used to own slips, forced upon me by my mother. But now my 28 year old self totally sees the value in them! Thanks for the reminder that great necessities can be purchased via thrift. :)

I always think of the same thing as to why some skirts are see through, then I realized I don't own a slip, so I went and searched for one or two during my thrift shopping and have them in nude and white, but have not yet found a black one. Gorgoues!!!!! :)
here, here for thrifted slips! black and nude all the way! i must have 10 of each. i keep the lace on mine and use them as cute little nightgowns in the summer!
Thank you! I took my 12 and 13 year old nieces to a Savers and found a white skirt, she wanted to wear it to church and I asked if she had a slip and she asked what that was! I got one of mine. Yes, the old ones are the best and that lace is annoying! I worked with a 22 year old intern that found out the importance of a slip walking in the sun one day at lunch;). She did not own a slip. My grandmothers are sad about this.
I'm old, not grandma, but mom age, and read your blog because you are smart,funny, and a good writer along with the great style. Anyway, if you sew, some good online sources have "microfiber knit" that is cool, stretchy, and great slip material. Of course, you can buy a length or two of silk charmeuse for a luxurious slip a fraction of rtw prices.
