Can't Let You Go

I have some good men in my life. My Dad, my Matt, my shoe-fixer guy and my alterations specialist guy. My alterations man has really been coming through for me lately. You see, I keep wearing out the inner thigh of all my jeans and he rescues them from the brink. I'd like to think I cause the wear because I walk everywhere, but let's be honest, my thighs are close friends. I have worn out many good jeans by tearing out the inner thigh (Seven for all mMankind, Rock and Republic, Chip and Pepper, Citizens...). Haha, that last sentence, I was name dropping like a celebrity on the red carpet... I do think, however, that premium denim is often worth their price tag. They work some magic and suddenly your jeans are like a bra for your butt and you can't stop checking out your backside in every shiny surface. Recently, I haven't spent a lot of money on jeans because I've really been making an effort to stay out of the jeans rut. Besides, the magic is spreading and places like Zara and Gap are offering much better fitting denim for good prices. That doesn't mean I don't love my skinny Seven for all Mankinds though. They are so soft, they are the perfect skinny fit and they are hanging on by a thread. I can't seem to let them go (same problem as with my other Sevens with the giant holes in the knees) and I keep taking them to my alterations guy to give me just a few more wears...

Look closely (ignore the fat cat head) and you will see 3(!) different denim patches in the inner thigh area. He patches the inside with denim and fusing and zigzags across the area with invisible thread so you can hardly see anything from the outside.

Well, you can see the wear but not the fix job... If I only move at slow speeds and avoid jumping into trucks (the cause for the last rip), these babies will be good for a few more wears. Suddenly my everyday jeans have become special occasion wear... Patched denim is going to be so hot this year and I'm ahead of the trend. Don't hate... just appreciate my alterations guy for being such a genius. Tell me... what can't you let go of, even though it may be time (sniff)?

(And for those local peeps who want to know who my shoe and alterations men are... they're the guys at Mountain Plaza Mall, by the Dutch store... get me some droppies while you're there.)

EDIT: Haha, I just realized how potentially awkward this post is with all the crotch shots. Nice. If you are new to my blog, I promise I am usually more normal.

True confession time!

I have an 80's jacket in the time capsule part of my closet that I can't bear to part with. Let me describe it for you: Canary yellow leather...shoulders that any football player would yearn for...western style fringe that encircles it. Got the picture? If not, think of Big Bird. Now, you've got the idea!

But, as laughable as it is now, it still moves with me from state to state. It connects me to a happy time in my life, regardless of how ridiculous it may appear by today's standards. As someone once so eloquently put it "The emotional attachment we have to these relics of the past is quite powerful."

Haha. I am relatively new to your blog (I came on board at "A Far Too Honest Year") but don't worry, the crotch shots haven't scared me off.
In fact I can totally relate and am devastated that I didn't think to take my most favourite ever jeans (Sevens) to get fixed when they broke in that same place. A home patch job just didn't cut it. Instead I have (reluctantly) moved them to the dress up box to wear on grunge nights.
Maybe there is still hope to save them. In fact I'll dig them out this weekend to assess the damage.

Wow those are some mad skills! I wish I could have had your tailor fix my jeans for me in gradeschool instead of the cheesy patches my mom would insist on repairing my jeans with. So not cool.

I have been putting holes in the inside leg of my jeans/shorts my whole life - I feel you! I tell myself my thighs are so close together because of my narrow hips . . .

I have a self-made lurid fuchsia-purple 80s dress that I will keep for ever:

I have an incredibly battered 80's Reebok sweatshirt, passed down from my dad, that I'm going to keep until it actually falls apart. It's the ultimate in comfort clothing but never ever to be worn outside the house.

Very jealous of the skills of your alterations guy! I've always just chucked out jeans that have gone on the thighs, it didn't occur to me to get them repaired. Although to be fair, they were cheap jeans anyway so it probably wasn't worth doing.

I have 1 pair that has done that, and its been a pair I have had since that time you took us bike riding for being in your wedding party. I have no idea why, but I guess I don't wear them out as fast. Like I say, my thighs have been making out for years.

ARE you more normal, Yen? ARE YOU??

I always have a hard time getting rid of my fav items. For me it is usually sweatpants. I keep them until they are literally hanging on by a thread.

Jeans can't contain the power that is my thighs, either. I haven't thought about having them patched since I don't buy premium denim. Do the patches feel any different? Do they add more bulk to an area that already rubs a little?

I just put up an outfit post with a sweater coat that has done the giveaway hokey-pokey for years. I don't know what it is about this thing (it's lost a lot of shape, pilling like crazy, and a difficult weight to wear under a coat or as an outer layer on its own), but I just can't seem to part with it!

haha, your post and some of these comments! :) I have to get my tailor to do this with a pair of my jeans that have gotten a hole in the rear!!!

Wow, that is some skillful patching, all right!

Oh I am so glad you posted this! I ALWAYS wear out my jeans right at that point. I thought it was just me... My tailor (well I should say tailors- the seven lovely Rafha brothers) works magic just like this.

not awkward, I've been there many times. I've done some successful self patching with iron ons but a pro looks like a better idea for a quality pair of jeans. :)

You aren't more normal ... but that's what I love about you :)

I have blown out the inner thighs of sooo many well-loved jeans. It's so frustrating! John often gets holes at the base of the zipper of his pants. He calls it "sharp nut."

this post touches my soul sista. Ive been there before!

Linda said...

LMAO at "sharp nut".

Oh my gosh, your alterations man is AMAZING!!!! Question- is there actually a such thing as "invisible thread" that's clear or whatever, or is it just thread that is denim coloured? I have been meaning to try patching my jeans like this, but I figured the thread would be really obvious from the outside... Also, what is fusing? Can you just get this from a fabric store?
