And while I dislike the word (or non-word), I definitely don't dislike the activity it describes...
... you may have noticed...
... I find it hard to avoid.
I've been wanting to take my blog in a clear thrift direction for a while. Yes, I still shop at other discount stores because I'm equal opportunity like that, but for me these last few years, thrift stores and fashion have gone together like balsamic Triscuits and slices of cucumber (try it... amazing). This summer was stupid busy and I didn't want to commit to regular thrift posts on the blog and fail but now that the schedule has eased a bit... I am pleased to announce...
Of course, it's Thrift Thursdays! Usually I spend my Thursdays organizing the fridge by sodium content but I can switch days for that because in the end, you have to choose the day that works best for alliterations. Honestly, my heart is beating fast with excitement (calm down Mr. Ticker... I need you) over thrift post ideas. I always get questions about thrifting and as I seem to be able to post about 3X a week and write about nothing, I figured I could commit to actually writing about something. Some of you already are masters of the art but I promise to spend all week thinking of jokes and throwing in the occasional bit of nudity to keep it interesting (kidding... at least about the jokes part).
I would love to hear your thoughts or ideas or sweet nothings whispered in my ear... you can even send it to that new fangled thing I have called an email address... it's myeditblog@gmail.com. My email is usually on the sidebar but my blog is under construction right now as it is getting a facelift. Yup, a lot of changes going on. But at the end of the day it'll be mostly the same... I'll still waste your time.

I'm totally looking forward to this! Everyone finds such great things "thrifting" and I just don't know how to approach such a task... Does one have to be magic? I don't know...
Anyway, I can't wait for the new series, and the nudity!
Yen, you are so flippin' hilarious! I think I love you. Sodium content! Nudity! Bwahahahaha!
Me, I call it 'op-shopping', as any good Kiwi girl would. If I wanted to be fancy and make myself understood to any international types, I would call it 'second-hand shopping'. (Extra hyphen? Second-hand-shopping? Hmmm. Being fancy is hard . . . )
Good idea! I've always thought you found the best things, and I definitely need help in that department.
X
PS. For the longest time I thought I already My Edit on my link list, and today realised I didn't and felt silly because it's one of my favourites. But you're on there now :)
ah! so fun. and i will say that i love all ways to use the word 'thrift.' it makes me happy. now 'antiquing' on the other hand makes my skin crawl, but that is neither here nor there. so i can't wait to hear all about your thrifting genius in the weeks to come. and seriously, if you ever feel the need to get rid of that amazing leopard coat, i'll be waiting for it :)
Ooh I am excited for Thrift Thursdays. I look forward to reading.
I don't mind the fact that "thrifting" is not really a word, I use it so much that it has become a word to me in it's own right. I say poopoo to the grammatically inclined...I will fight for the word "thrifting".
Where do you find all your thrift shop steals in Hamilton? I feel like I can never find anything!
I look forward to this. I've been saying for a while someone should start a "Thrift Week" to celebrate all the finds people have from thrifting.
The Auspicious Life
I'm excited for this! Maybe some of your hard core thrift luck with rub off on us readers :) your finds are always so amazing!
ps. i just moved up to montreal, would you have any suggestions on awesome thrift stores around here? i know you're not from montreal, but maybe you've visited?
You're not wasting my time. I love your posts and I look forward to Thrift Thursdays. =)
I love it when you waste my time (I feel like I should be whispering that in a deep creepy voice - is that odd?)
balsamic Triscuits ???????????????????? i love the rosemary ones (oh god yes) but balsamic? did you make that up??? don't lie now.
im excited about this idea of yours.
you honestly lately push me to look for more glitter in the salvation army... It's all you baby.
I honestly can't write comments that don't cover 5 topics... it's like i feel im cheating you if i don't discuss several things... as if i only read half and am commenting on that. ok im rambling. over and out.
Em
I love thrifting and it is a real word because I told firefox so.
Sometimes I wish I had more thrifting access -- your thrifted finds are truly stunning, and while I occasionally pick up a piece with some wow factor, it's most run of the mill kohls rejects.
I'm excited for Thrift Thursdays!
Chic on the Cheap
I don't think I've ever commented on your blog but have followed for awhile and have wasted much work time reading it (and a few others) instead.
I love thrifting, or second-handing or whatever you want to call it but want your perspective on to thrift or not thrift an item: If you love a piece but it's not "in style" do you thrift it anyway? I'm not big on being trendy but I do want to be stylish. I thrifted a late 80's purple plaid skirt a few weeks back and now I'm nervous to wear it, but I love it when I put it on. Ok, sorry for the super long comment, but really would like to know how you decide what to thrift - based more on love of an item or on style?
This will be all kinds of fun! Oh and for the record I totally agree with the use of the word "thrifting". I hate that everytime I write it out I see that red squiggle line underneath it. Maybe you can submit it to the Webster Dictionary, like Rachel Ray did with "Yummo"
i went "thrifting" today for the first time in YEARS. and it was a total success. i used to be a master and then i lost the "gift".
If we use it often enough will it become a word? Can't wait for thrift thursdays!!!
Never a waste of time and ALWAYS entertaining...keep it up.
i am totally in love with your dress in the second picture with the broach. If I saw that in a store I would pay big money for it!!!
Can't wait! I "thrift" but do not have nearly your skillz so I am ready to learn about your magic.
Also, I agree with what someone said above, namely that even when I totally lurve something in the store, I usually lack the necessary cajones (that chutzpah in Southern California) to actually wear it. I'm a 47 year old mom ... I don't think I can carry off a Carrie Bradshaw look no matter how much I love it in my own full length mirror!
Anyway, good luck ... and have fun!
Ooooh! Happy day! Jokes and "going shopping at second-hand stores in order to get ridiculously good deals" are two of my favorite things.
Fun! You always find the best stuff. I have been bad/lazy about posting my thrift finds lately. Looking forward to Thrift Thursdays :)
The funny thing about words is that they don't exist until people need them. And once they become widespread, what defines whether or not its a "real" word? If enough people use it, I think it becomes a real word in its own right. Sometimes what is in a dictionary and isn't in one is arbitrary. Creating new words is kind of the inevitable evolution of language - "online" wasn't always a word :o
Oh, yes please! I'm excited to see what's in store (no pun intended) for Thrift Thursdays! :)
Yay! I think this is awesome. I need my thrift fix, even if it is vicarious. Ever since I moved to the metro area, thrifting has been utter crap...whenever I visit family and friends back on the west coast, I I try to stop by some of my old thrifting haunts. Because I feel sad and empty without it. :(
And if I were to arrange my fridge by sodium content, I'd notice that the sodium intake went up a lot ever since my boyfriend moved in. Hmm.
I think the word/non-word is just fine, and I teach English (so maybe it's just that I'm okay with making up words; that's why dictionaries change so much - "D'oh!"); however, I sometimes call it "Hunting and Gathering."
It could be a) the fun reference to cave people or b) the juxtaposition of that against the deer hunting students I have who want to cut class or c) the adoration I have right now for anything that looks like made by an eskimo.
Anyhow, I love your Thrift Thursday idea & I love thrifting or hunting or whatever people want to call it.
If you need a "topic"... I recently picked up some 50% off slips (1 in zebra print, 1 with multiple oranges, 1 in camo green), what could I layer with them to create "work/campus/teaching" outfits as well as "drinks w/friends" outfits.
:o) Have a lovely weekend!
booo hisss, you don't like the word thrifting?!? I'm trying to get it added to dictionary.com along with garage sale-ing! Looking forward to Thrift Thursdays, you always find phenomenal items!
Here we call it op-shopping, as second hand shops here are known as 'op(portunity) shops'.
Looking forward to your new series.
In the UK, we have charity shops, which means we go charity shop shopping - or chazzer shopping, which is, from a grammatical perspective, way worse than thrifting.
Jentine, this is brilliant! I can't wait for these regularly postings! I'm trying to go the same way by (grit teeth) thrifting more as well. Let the weekly alliterations begin!!!
You have the best "thrifting" luck, so TT makes sense!
Also, balsalmic Triscuits? What?
You have amazing legs. And amazingly long legs.
Je suis un peu jaloux.
I read that you don't like the word "thrifting" and I thought, "Oh, rats, I use that word every day on my blog." hehehe. My blog is focused on thrifting and re-fashioning.
Enjoying your blog very much! I love the idea of TT!
Ooooh! I'm so excited! Can't wait.
wooooo! thrift thursdays. i dig it. and i'll be sure to tune in.
wait...can i whisper sweet nothings...even if it has nothing to do with the [dreaded] thrifting??
Sounds like a great feature! I also definitely agree with your frustration about the (non-word) thrifting! Oh well! XOXO, http://www.NatalyasCloset.com
I am really excited to see this new addition to your blog! I've been following you for awhile and I am interested to hear more about how you thrift (especially considering how successful you are).
I love your blog! Sent here by alreadypretty.com and am putting your blog in my bookmark bar. I'm also nuts about thrifting, and have a memory card full of images that I need to post on my own blog.
Actually, as an English teacher, I'm grammatically inclined. But, I also have a special place in my heart for verbified nouns. Therefore, I'm all about the thrifting.
This is good site to spent time on.
Hmmm very interesting:)
