Preach Sister

(My sister-in-law told me yesterday that I was slacking with my blogging. Truthfully, there is no slacking, I am just currently enslaved to my sewing machine as I strive to send a bride down the aisle fashionably... I will save that 'I'm so tired and whiny' post for when the dress is done and my teeth stop grinding. Something to look forward to?...)

Shirt? Local fundraiser, can't find a link to buy it but here's a video with some info.
Skirt? Loft, thrifted
Shoes? Zara, old

The ladies of Achedemichic have had some discussion lately about slogan tees that was very interesting, though I don't wear them a lot. True, I wore this shirt a while back but usually I am too busy wearing shiny stuff to think about words. Back in the day, I used to wear a shirt that said 'Plastic makes Perfect' across the chest because I thought I was so darn clever. Though there is of yet nothing plastic about me (except my mouth guard), I didn't mind stirring the pot... I am acutely aware of the fact that I am the most superficial of my friends, so the tee was a pre-emptive strike. You can't really make fun of the girl who has already said every joke about herself... And then I realized that it was a stupid reason to wear a shirt and it made strangers stare at my chest, so the shirt was retired.
This message though, I could get behind. I've been wanting this tee for a while and then my supervisor actually tracked one down for me. Pretty sweet... Last year alone, over 3000(!!!!!) cats got put down in the Hamilton area. I've said it before, but if you are lounging on your leather couch, eating Jelly Belly's and watching your 27 foot (is that size on the market yet?), high definition TV and telling yourself that you can't afford to take care of your cat's business, then something is clearly wrong with you. If you cannot afford to emotionally, physically and financially support an animal, do not get a pet.

Matt got me B.E.C. (left, she is not pleased at being picked up and is biting me) for my birthday (my best present ever) from the SPCA so she came to us spayed. Stella (middle) was a neighbourhood stray that was picked up by animal control and subsequently rescued by us from death row. We don't know Stella's back story; we think he may have been abandoned but at least, he was already neutered and he didn't go forth and multiply during his months of freedom. Kyle (right, he is very comfortable lying upside down) was given to Matt as a joke on his birthday party. I would not recommend surprising anyone with a pet but we fell in love with the tiny fur monster. Kyle is super soft, good looking and incredibly patient with the abuse of affection and while we thought he would have made pretty cat spawn, we did the right thing. We sat Kyle down, explained the process to him and took him to get neutered... Ok, we only did the last part of that sentence but that was the important part...
Do you wear slogan tees? ... More importantly, is your cat fixed?

P.S. I wore this out to dinner, shopping and for a party... people stared, giggled, and asked questions.

Haha, wow your shirt wastes no time does it? My two male Siamese cats are fixed! Good thing too, you don't want them multiplying. They are so silly! (And they get fat from breathing air, who knew?)

I'm not much of a person to wear a slogan tee because I don't like when people stare at my chest but I'm not against them or anything. This one is hilarious! I don't have a cat but if I did it would be fixed.

I haven't worn a slogan tee in years (I think the last one said "thimk", yes, with an "m" - I thought it was clever when I was 18).

Aw, love your kitties. My cat is fixed, as was our cat that just died. We got both from the SPCA, and will get our next kitten from there (and will get him fixed too).

I love the massive polka dots.

I love you. And I love that shirt. And I love that you wore it out to dinner. And I want one. And seriously gimme back my cat. I don't know how Clyde made it up nort, so I'll admit I'm impressed but seriously..... SOULMATES.

I couldn't agree with your message more. I volunteered at an animal shelter in DC where I adopted my dog. Owners were coming in left and right to "return" their dogs or cats that they didn't want anymore. I can't comprehend how people get an animal and think it's ok to just return it if they're not fully satisfied. Someone needs to explain to them the the full responsibility it takes to own an animal. It really bothers me! As you can tell.

I was going to send this over to Merl, but I see she's already been here!
Your kitties are adorable, thanks for adopting!!

I love a hilarious, yet smart and important, message T; yours is freaking awesome! And it looks great with the dots and beautiful gold flats.

I resist the message t's now, except when I work out. Then I wear a shirt that says "Note to self: I'm rad."

Finally, it fills me with rage that people abandon pets, or let them wander un-neutered/spayed, or return them to shelters or breeders. I wish everyone could be as responsible as you & Matt (and your other commenters, and me, of course).

i have two favorite slogan tees. one has an owl on it and says, "give a hoot, don't pollute." the other i got at a silly, touristy shop here in virginia beach - it's black with bright colored letters and it says, "I [heart] this crazy place. Virginia Beach." :)

i adopted both of my kitties from Chesapeake Cat Rescue. they're both spayed, healthy and happy. their names are Mele and Kona. :)

i love your outfit and your cats and your cause!

Yup, Oscar has been fixed, as have all the cats that have lived with us over the years. It wouldn't enter my head not to get it done.

I don't have many slogan tees but I am fond of one that says "retro sucks" in a lovely 70s style orange and brown pattern.

This is too funny...I used to wear a tee that said, "I'm not nice" and was illustrated with a black cat with major CLAWS.

I have two cats -- brothers -- and they are most definitely fixed. I also don't believe in declawing cats, so our guys have all their nails.

I also don't usually wear tees with words on them, unless it is something really great. I completely agree with you about getting your pets spayed/neutered. We adopted an adult dog from the SPCA and it was a fantastic experience. They are a great organization.

LOl i love this slogan tee!! I went through a faze of wearing a few slogan tee's but haven't worn any in a while, maybe it's time to dig them back out.

Whoo, you make a great poster girl! And I don't have any cats (don't make me spay the cockatiel . . ). I'm kind of in love with Kyle though - he's gorgeous.

I wear place-name and band t-shirts all the time for work. Slogans, no.

Holy shit this is the best shirt ever. Oh man. If they start making them available on the net, let me know.

I wore a few slogan shirts back in the day but not so much any more. I think I only really have one. It says "Now Panic and Freak Out" and is a play on that "Keep
Calm and Carry On".

Melissa said...

That shirt is fantastic! Granted, I don't have the guts to wear a slogan tee but I love it when other people do. I live vicariously through them.

And by the way, yes, both of our cats are fixed. :)

I love love love slogan tees, and I don't care if people think they are a "don't" or whatever. I have one that says, "I'm not Irish, but I play one on TV." Grammatically incorrect-ish, but funny. I also have, "It's all my fault," that I like to wear to committee meetings on campus. I used to have a Simpsons tee with Ralph's quote about failing English.

ANYHOW, my kitty cat was taken care of the minute she was old enough for the surgery; I found her on the ghetto streets of Fargo. :o)

I have a question --- you always look so tan; did I miss a post about how you keep this glow about you?

LOVE the pok-a-dots!

Kyle is hilarious.

The number 3000 makes me super sad. One of my cats was abandoned by douchebag owners, but I am the luckier for it. And he is neutered but still very manly.

Nice tee. Nice skirt. Awesome cats.

i would absolutely wear that shirt (and probably give one to everyone i know). all of my family's cats (three in tx, 2 in nm) and dogs (2 in tx, 3 in nm) are fixed. the stray dog we took in off the street this week, however, is intact, but won't be as soon as we can get a collar on him. in the meantime he does not get to go anywhere near any unaltered ladies. he's beautiful, but no babies.

That is the best slogan tee I've seen. Ever. I'm not a cat person (allergic) but I would totally rock a dog version.

Emma at Daily Clothes Fix said...

I love your tee - so funny but thought-provoking.

Personally I am cat-free due to a lack of ability to find time to look after myself, let alone another living creature.

Well I have to first say that the neon pink lettering really goes with the polka dot print. Now for the slogan, I think it's nice when it's a good message like the one you are promoting. I can't imagine it would offend anyone, but you never know. And I have had several cats over the years who we have always fixed and they have lived happy, normal cat lives. So I fully support it. A ton of stray cats with no homes is too sad.

Hahahahaha, your tee and outfit are awesome.

love that shirt. how funny would it be to see bob barker wearing it?? ha.

Raquelita said...

Haha! I love the tee! I don't have any cats, but my dog (who is a rescue) is spayed.

Style, She Wrote said...

Fun outfit! Good cause too! Bob Barker would definitely support it.

I was thinking the same thing as Keira - if there is a dog version - I'm wearing it!!! My dogs are both spayed - and one my little rescue is the cutest sweetie pie, despite having a grown in collar scar over an inch wide the entire way around her neck :( People suck- I would rock the shirt - and am all for rescues!!! :)

That shirt is AWESOME. You look fabulous. I love how you dressed up the tee with a cute polka-dot skirt and glamorous gold flats.

I agree 100%. It breaks my heart when people get pets and then don't take care of them properly.

you are hilarious! i love your sense of humor, jentine.

That shirt is brilliant! I totally agree in spaying and neutering, and that's a wonderful and funny way to remind people that it's important. I always love your wit, Jentine.

so glad you posted your shirt, I love seeing people get the word out. It's such an important cause!!!!

I like slogan tees when worn well. Like, you wear this well. Though the adorable polka dot skirt steals the spotlight.

I do not have a cat, but if I did, it would be fixed FOR SURE.

gina said...

Yes and yes. I wear slogan tees and my cats are fixed.

I LOOOOOOVE this tee!

Colleen said...

I like the tee.

I don't wear slogan tees but if I did, this would be one that I could stand behind.

We have a cat (that I obsessively post pictures about on my blog) and we rescued her so she was already spayed

Caro said...

What a great campaign! Bob Barker would be proud. And I adore that polka dot skirt!

Zarah said...

I adore you SO much for this post!
(And yes, bth our cats are fixed, gets their shots regularly a.s.o. Indoor cats need that care too, no matter what people seem to think.)

Adore the tee too! :D
