This Week I Thrifted...

grthrift1

What? A lot of vintage jewelry...:)
Where? Salvation Army, 28th Street, Grand Rapids
How Much? Various prices but the most expensive was the sterling mini perfume necklace for $7. Not too shabby...
Why? I went down to Grand Rapids this week to watch one of my brothers do his dissertation defense and while I was there, I made sure my priorities were in order and I did some thrifting as well. I didn't thrift alone; after 2.5 years of online love, I finally met Brianne in person (she's real and very pretty... I stared at her a lot... I like to keep it creepy) and we made thrift magic. I always check Brianne's blog because she must have the best vintage jewelry collection, so it was extremely fitting that the Salvation Army near my hotel was having their annual jewelry sale on the day we went thrifting. Call that great timing or just, freaking amazing. There were tables and tables of jewelry and it was so overwhelming that we went twice just to make sure we caught all the good stuff. I bought 6 necklaces and 2 pairs of earrings... I could have bought so much more but I was trying to exercise self control in front of my new friend.

Seriously, how cute (a word usually reserved for puppies, kitties and an occasional baby) is this vintage perfume pendant? And yes, the patterned dress? It's a brand new, silk, Banana Republic dress that I found at a thrift store in Grand Rapids too...

What did you thrift this week?

What did you buy me? That's the more important question.

I didn't get much for myself this week. I blame it on a head cold which made me grumpy and maybe not as creative as I could be! ;) I did find a sweet black CASHMERE turtleneck sweater though!
I adore your new perfume necklace!

I got:

* A cute vintage pyrex small casserole dish...it's blue with a floral/paisley/bird-y design on it.

* A bike helmet identical to my old, falling-apart helmet (at 5% the price!)

* A United Colors of Benneton blazer (needs alterations, but still awesome piece) - $5!

* And my very favorite bit of kismet---I have this beautiful pair of magenta pumps from Payless circa 2006-ish. I adore them, but they're starting to come apart and I've begun searching for their replacements (cheapest option in the right color ~ $70). I walked into my local thrift store this week, and what do I see staring at me on the shoe rack, but these EXACT SAME PAYLESS MAGENTA PUMPS in totally unworn condition and in my size. <3 We're clearly solemates! (hyuk hyuk)

Umm- SO WEIRD! I live RIGHT NEAR Grand Rapids.. this is crazy! So, so soo crazy. I can't believe you were so close. Wow, I sound so weird.
I went thrifting today, too. I didn't go to that Salvation Army though, I went to a Goodwill. I found a pair of Loft corduroys and a bunch of button ups in cute plaids. I say cute plaids because there's a difference between cute plaids and ugly plaids.

I have almost identical pieces myself. All from my grandma, so much fun!

OH! I almost forget - I found this pair of amazing shoes, red with black toe tips (kind of like the nude pumps at Zara with the black toe tips) and they say "1932" on them, they are Delman's, and they look older but they are in amazing shape. I was just shocked to see what I thought was a trendy/modern detail on a vintage shoe. Very cool.

I've had a lot of luck thrifting in the last year (with you as my primary inspiration for diving in to every Salvation Army and church charity shop I can find) and good vintage jewelry always eludes me. I can't believe these scores!!

Stop flaunting the mini perfume bottle in front of me. You know how jealous I am of it ;)

Come back to Michigan so we can make thrift magic happen again.

Wow! I live in Grand Rapids! I stumbled upon your blog from Kendi's blog, which I totally discovered by accident and have been checking in to see all your great suggestions (p.s. my in-laws are from the Netherlands!). Anyway, imagine my surprise to see that you were here in GR! I teach at a university here and am orginially from a small city in the upper pennisula of Michigan that borders Canada, so I spent my youth shopping at Winners, Zellers, Value Village, La Senza, and Roots--ha...small world!

Love you blog and your amazing thrifted-ness and style!

I bought a purple & black patterned t-shirt ($2.50), a cute burgundy & sparkle studded velvet hoodie ($2.50), and an emerald green Andoroc France Diamant chip & dip set for $4.99, all at Salvation Army on Upper James. I hope I can find more of the Andorac Diamant stuff in Emerald green!

If you can believe it, that Salvation Army has actually gone downhill since it opened in 2003. I used to get the most unbelievable unworn designer stuff there when I was in college.

My favorites in GR now are the St.VdP on South Division and some Christian school's shop on 28th Street across from The Dutch Store.

I thifted that same exact dress from Platos Closet. It might have been $12 USD.

I thrifted a great wool plaid over the knee skirt, and men's vintage ties to make scarves. There was a fabulous rabbit fur coat that was $19.99, but I couldn't do the real fur.
