Trench? Mackage, Winners
Skinny jeans? Gap
Boots? ?, Winners
Plaid shirt? Ralph lauren, thrifted
Necklace? antique show
Wood handled clutch? Old Navy... but thrifted

I feel so bad for those poor housewives of Orange County and New York... they seem to think that their social standing will rise along with the size of their lips. The truth is, nothing says 'I'm a classy broad' like a perfect trench. My trench mitigates (is this the right way to use this word or am I pretending to be smart?) the fact that my nails are really chipped, that my jeans attract a lot of the cat hair and threads that are in abundance in our house right now and that my linen shirt is in constant need of a press. All those things fade to the background in the presence of a great trench coat...
Initially I was unsure of whether I should use the clutch with this outfit or not... looking back on the pictures I'm glad I grabbed it. It is really a great pop of colour and the bit of pattern mixing isn't bad either... I convinced myself that the navy and kelly green clutch was good fit because the purple (I wish you could see that better...) of my jeans was undoubtedly a result of mixing navy with a pinch of red. Hence navy is the common denominator... simple mathematics really....

ps. I feel like I just won an Easter colouring contest and took home the 10 lb. chocolate bunny and I don't have to share with any of my brothers!... I won the Capsule Challenge that The Small Fabric of my Life issued out! Yeah! I was bent on using my newly found capsule skills since I'm flying out to meet a friend tomorrow but I just learned I can take 144 lbs of luggage with me! Thanks WestJet!

Congrats on the win!

Have to agree about the value of a great trench. And also have to admit to watching Housewives of Orange County/Atlanta (only while at the gym! I swear!). The amount of plastic surgery is definitely onnnne of the things that horrifies me every time. Scares me how very different their mentality toward...everything...is from mine.

Love the plaid and the necklace, the black skinnies with the brown boots. Looks great.

I want that clutch. In other news, you SHOULD have won, because you were clearly the best. I love these shots, and I agree with you that a trench is a gorgeous gorgeous thing. I've never had one; one of the downsides to being child-sized is the fact that no coats (but especially trenches) ever fit. Oh well. Once my sister got a little boy's trench that looked okay, the only problem being that children's clothes don't ever have room for the, uh, "feminine wiles," as ScarJo calls them. By that I mean the breasts.

Anyway, what am I talking about? You look divine!

Lovely clutch. Lovely trench. They just make everything seem more pulled together don't they?

So I'm all like, 'ooh, Irishy clutch!', but of course I'm a day ahead of you, and I've been wearing green ALL DAY (3 outfits: zumba class, civilian life, ballet class) but you are just being stylish! Not Irish. Even though you're Dutch. Anyway . .

LOVE that shirt! Every time it's a winner!

I agree that the perfect trench makes you feel classy and sophisticated like no other wardrobe piece can! I just picked up my first trench the other day (a tier-bottomed one from Anthro) and I felt like a million bucks walking around in it :) And I'm glad you chose to carry the bag -- the bright color is the perfect complement to your outfit, and in general it is so pretty!

i couldn't agree more. a trench is essential. and yesterday it was finally warm enough here for me to put away my wool coat and bust out the trench. i was so happy to get reacquainted with it after such a long winter.
p.s. i love the clutch!

Your outfits are so creative and I am loving your blog -- I'm definitely following!

I love how spring inspires everyone to wear a splendid, tailored trenched -- it's like the sunshine comes out and everyone looks so chic!

I also love that necklace paired with that funky clutch. So cute. :)

I love this whole outfit! The boots and clutch are perfect!

I think I still need to add a classic trench to my closet.

A nice crisp trench can indeed mitigate (and yes, you used that word properly!) or balance out a lot of raggedness in the rest of a look - in fact, I like them styled just like this, with a less-structured look underneath. Otherwise, it looks a little too buttoned-up. Remember, they're called "trench coats" because they were originally worn by soldiers in the trenches in World War I, conditions under which I can only image that sartorial standards, um, slipped a bit...

Congrats on your win and have a great trip!

You totally used mitigate correctly. And congrats on the big win! You deserve it - that was a truly inspiring capsule.

Congrats on winning! Agreed on the trench - I have yet to find one I really like. I have a cut red one, actually, but apparently I thought I could fit into a size 2 when I bought it. And that just isn't true. I initially thought the clutch was in honor of St Patty's Day :) I love it.

I like this outfit. The clutch and the pendant make it interesting. Where do you take these pics, though? The backgrounds looks very depressing

Thank GOD you won, because now you can fit me in your suitcase! You're such a peach yen.

I bought a few kimonos the other day at a vintage store dt.. I tried to convince my friends that I could wear the one long one as a spring/summer coat once I got it hemmed.. Judging from their stares first, doubled over laughter second, it looks like I also need to get myself a trench. dammit.

I dream of a perfect trench, but still haven't managed/dared to go out and find one. Even though I keep having vivid fantasies of how amazing I would look and how everything I own would go with it... Love yours!

I love this. I think that bag is my favorite thing this week.

Congrats on winning the contest. Much deserved!

Anonymous- The pictures were taken by some Candy factory... I thought it would be deserted but people kept walking by. Awkward.
Others- I'm glad I used mitigated correctly.

Oh man, I have that clutch! I've literally never brought it out of the house because I lose stuff so often I'm scared to carry a bag that doesn't have a strap. The pattern's great, though!
I love that trench too. :D

I agree - a good classic trench is key! I LOVE your necklace and the juxtaposition with the plaid shirt! The clutch is just the right pop of color too!

This is an A+! Trenches are like the security blankets of style - they somehow make everything okay.

Your trench is beautiful and it definitely becomes the focus of this whole look. You are pretty damn beautiful too, lady!

WOW ! i tried to find a post with fewer comments, to say thanks for the honest post on the blog biz - especially jealousy ! Soo many times I have wondered why my followers are so little and get down on my style sense, Age, and let the feelings consume me! I tried to "please" the "in" crowd of Blogdonia, and nearly hit the stars with excitement when a popular blogger liked and followed me! I have almost given up soo many times, but I have to remember the excited feeling I get when One of my beloved followers comments. It's a high! Thanks for your honesty! I was so afraid I was the only one! Duh!
