I just finished this dress (OK, I still have to get buttonholes done and sew on a hook and eye, don't be technical) and it melts my heart a little. It's simple, sweet, unexpected with the back opening and can totally be worn again. I know the whole 'you can wear it again' thing can be the kiss of death...chances are you are not going to wear your floor length, highlighter blue dress ever, anywhere (yes, you know who you are)... but I think this is completely versatile. Wear it to the office with a white blouse underneath and a black leather belt and then lop 5 inches off the bottom and wear it out dancing...

A Sneak Peak
I don't usually show or write about dresses that I'm working on until after they have made their trip down the aisle. I honestly don't really know why I feel so exposed when I show anything I've made but if you want a whole rehash of my love/hate relationship with designing, check here. Right now I'm on the love side of the design cycle. I've taken on a few projects recently and they are all ones that are pretty exciting. I have six black bridesmaid dresses to do... the skirts are all the same with a pleated, tulip waist and pockets and the tops of the dresses are all different. Level-headed Jentine says that I'm a fool for making custom tops for everyone since the range is really wide and it's a lot more work. Passionate Jentine says that it's so much more fun this way... Passionate Jentine wins, she's way cooler anyways...

it's such a treat to get a sneak peek at your work! Love the cut-out back and button details on this one :o)
The "wear again" issue is important to me, both when I was the bride and when I'm a bridesmaid, and making the dresses personal and unique will pretty much guarantee that these women will get much more use out of the dress than just the one day.
WOW. Just WOW.
The dress looks great =).
OMG "S" IS GOING TO DIE AT THAT REFERENCE! HILARITY!
May I have the pattern for that dress? Do you have it in "extra fat with a side of thunder thighs?". Let me know, nah, just make me one, who am I kidding?
If bridezilla lets me have a custom dress, I want this.
This is such a classic, lovely dress! Very versatile and classy.
Ummm...can you add some extra yards on that dress to fit me and send it to me!?!?
ohhh jentine it's gorgeous!! i love the cut-out in the back and those black buttons are amazing. what perfect details.
and guess what?? my mom came last weekend and taught me how to make pleats! i still wouldn't know how to add one to a skirt or dress that's already made but hey, you gotta start somewhere...
so lovely. i would love to have that dress to wear any day! it's totally my style! i love the neckline!
and i would love to see more of the close you design and make on here!
i would not mind adding this BEAUTY to my wardrobe! love the classic black and sexy cut out in the back. your talent is superb!

Looks like a classic silhouette with that sexy surprise in the back. So gorgeous!
It's gorgeous! You're extremely talented.
I just found you via a few other bloggers and I have to say that dress is amazing and beautiful and totally re-wearable! I'm already thinking of about 10 different situations it could be worn in. Bravo to you!!
Oh that's just beautiful. I love all the little details.
so i went against everything you told me and bought a new sewing machine.. (seriously the only type the gma's on craigslist had were the 2 ton/built into a desk the size of a somoa tree variety) and i already taught myself how to use it! and i've also learned that i'm not good at measuring by eye, and to not be such a cowgirl, ie measure out the hem idiot. so basically i could make that same dress.. if you sent me one, and i hemmed it an inch. save your praise, please.
ugh your so talented it would be annoying if i didn't like you.
you are so talented!! I love it, especially the belt and the buttons on the back. Do you think you could hem some of my pants?
I am so jealous of your sewing abilities. I NEED to learn this. If I come to Canada, will you teach me?
xx
I would wear that dress in a hot minute, bridesmaid or no! Thanks for letting us see!
Love the cut out details. I have toyed with the idea of making custom dresses for awhile..well I actually did make a Wedding Dress and 4 bridesmaids dresses for a friend..and did my wedding dress and bridal party as well...the biggest problem I find is that I get bored doing the same thing over and over..so as long as the dresses are all different I'm fine..but otherwise I go insane! I'm thinking you should definatly be showing off your sewing skills on this blog more often!!!
wow jen, that button detail is absolutely fabulous. i recently tried a detail similar to this on a lace piece i was making and got so mad i lobbed it into a skirt. you have mad skills my friend.
im SO glad you share! and you'd better share the others too!
Thanks so much for sharing this and the link to your story in there too.
I can relate in that I went to Beauty School and haven't really done anything conventional with it and kinda freak out a bit if people ask me to do their make up for an event even though I'm fully qualified. Guess it's just a confidence thing that we're gonna have to get over.
Don't ever doubt your abilities though, this dress is gorgeous. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest if you decide to share.
there is nothing i love more than an open back
nice!
I love when you do these posts. The cut of this dress is absolutely beautiful and the open back...simply Wow. You're going to have some beautiful bridesmaids walking down the aisle soon!

This dress is beautiful! I love the tulip skirt, and I believe it does have everyday wearability. I would wear it, anyway.
Chic on the Cheap
Beautiful Dress!! Isn't is so satisfying to put the finishing touches on something that you have sewn and designed yourself!! I find it so gratifying and it is even better if the customer like it as much as you do!!
Great job on the dress and good luck with the remaining ones!

Gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS. I would so wear that again. And again. You're really talented, you know that? Love the open back - such a fun surprise, as are those little buttons.
Lovely, simply lovely. Please show us more!
The back of that dress is so perfect! I love your design!
Congratulations on being the Spring Capsule Wardrobe Challenge Champion!
this looks amazing, I love the back!

ohhhhh my gosh!! You made that?! It is seriously amazing an gorgeous! I so wish I had the talent to construct garments like that!
I am jealous!! I wish I could create such beautiful things. But I've learned my sewing machine skills are a little inept.
