Designer Duds

I like my designer fashions with big red tags on them. Preferably with pen markings all over the red tags as the price drops. I also like them in thrift stores.
Perhaps one day I will be able to contribute to the designer market by paying full price but right now, it's just not happening. My stairs called, they really need to be re-carpeted, then my night courses left a message about payment and my mortgage just doesn't like to be put on hold. So, I do not waste time desiring the latest Marc Jacobs bag, I admire it and move on. But for some reason I cannot get this jacket out of my mind...

smythe jacket amazing!

It's the Smythe interpretation of the classic Hudson's Bay blanket jacket (here's a cool pic off flickr). I am always on the look-out for the original while thrifting... but what I really want is this sweet baby. I don't even know if it was actually produced to be sold or just as a marketing thing and I have no clue how much it would even cost but I do know I love the Canadiana appeal, the uneven hem, the oversized hood and the dramatic volume. I don't remember the last time I obsessed over an article of clothing so out of my league...
I know there is no chance that this jacket will ever be mine, but on the off-chance that some big wig at The Bay is reading this, I just want you to know I would sell out hard core for this jacket. We could rename my blog My Hudson Bay Edit... whatever, you name it, I'll do it. Email me.

Yes, I finally got a official blog email. I'm a snail in the blogging world...Podcasts, whatever... I've got a blog email b*tches! The point is, fell free to email me about stuff...like fashion, thrift stores, good shoe repair guys, landscaping and girl problems. I excel in those areas. My weak areas include computer advice and baking. Now you know.

  2. Truthfully, I have never been much for Canadiana inspired merchandise. But the shape of this jacket plus the way it is styled in the above photo make me want it also! I will never look at The Hudson Co.'s colors the same again! Thanks for enlightening moi!

The colors remind me of Fruit Stripes gum for some reason.

  7. Hi! I work for Hudson's Bay Company in the eBusiness department and I am obsessed with this beautiful coat as well. Smythe did an incredible job. I spoke with a Bay Signature Store rep. and he said that the designs are show pieces only, and won't actually be sold on the retail market. Which, totally broke my heart. But, the coats have been getting tons of buzz, so who knows! Maybe there will be enough demand for it that the higher-ups will change their minds. The coat the you see in the store could never actually be worn because the blanket material is extremely thick and stiff so if they ever DO make the coat to be sold to the public, it would be made from a material that is a little more wearable.

The stripes would stay, of course. ;)

  16. that jacket sorta reminds me of a leggy female version of max from where the wild things are, but i can't say why...(oh, maybe the whisker things on the side of the hood). in any case, you'd rock it.
my fingers are crossed for you for a lucky lotto ticket!!

  19. MM- Ok, I wanted to talk about the fact that a lot of underpriviledged people in downtown Hamilton have these coats and I always want to ask if I can buy them. I assume they are really warm to be their garment of choice... I just didn't know how to address buying coats off the less fortunate for fashion in a sensitive way.
The guy in the picture kinda helps to establish the Hudson's Bay coat as homeless chic fashion statement (I mean homeless as a general term because he may in fact have a big home).
    Thanks for the link! :)

  26. Very nice coat. I'm sure you know already, but it's similar to a "capote" from the trading era. I found a web site with a how-to capote: http://www.inquiry.net/OUTDOOR/WINTER/GEAR/CAPOTE.HTM

Perhaps it'll give you some ideas.

    Gorgeous!

  27. Oh,it's funny but I assisted the stylist Alon Freeman for the shooting of this picture and other coats by Canadian designers. I forgot to get Globe and Mail to see how they turned out, but it's nice to see they are on the web now...
    Thx for posting

  28. I just sold this coat. There were 100 made and released for the Olympics. You can sometimes find them on Ebay. They retailed for $695. check out the HBC Points Blanket history area or search for outerwear on their website... "A special order of 100 units of the Smythe design was recently made for sale at the 2010 Winter Olympic Superstore in Vancouver, where it retailed for $695. Whether modern or vintage, the HBC blanket coat remains a winter classic."
http://www.hbc.com/hbcheritage/history/blanket/outerwear/ Sometimes this link just takes you to the homepage and doesn't work, but the page exists and so does the jacket. Which is gorgeous and a great piece.
    have fun finding one!
